Frequently Asked Questions About Hydroseeding and Erosion Control

What is Hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is the application of a combination of grass seed, mulch, fertilizer and tackifier. Hydroseeding is one of the fastest, most cost-effective and highest quality methods of seeding.

We use only weed-free seeds with the highest germination rates available. Custom mixes are available, native or turf varieties. We use 100% reclaimed and thermally refined wood fiber for higher water retention and growth yield. Mulch has a natural green dye added for visual coverage that will fade at about the same rate as germination.

Different blends of fertilizers are used to build a sustainable environment for germination and allow for vegetation to be established quickly. Soil testing may be needed for customizable conditions. Biostimulants, soil amendments, macro/micro nutrients and specialized fertilizers can be added based on soil reports and conditions.

Tackifier is a natural botanic glue from the plantago plant. It is used to “stick” the seed mixture to the soil to improve germination. It also aids in dust and erosion control until germination can protect the surrounding soil.

Cost is one of the biggest differences. Sod can cost anywhere between $0.60-$1.25 per square foot for the material and up to an additional $1 to have it installed. Hydroseeding costs a fraction of sod, never exceeding $0.30, even if all the additives are added. In short, hydroseeding is roughly 75% LESS expensive than sod.

Yes! We can provide Biotic soil media or hydraulic growth medium (top soil replacements) for difficult to reach areas where poor soil conditions exist or are hard to access.

Absolutely. We can assist in identifying and then matching existing grass. This is excellent if you have a damaged or dead area, or need to be seeded after renovation or other landscaping is completed.

Your new grass will be healthy and will be delivered without the possibility of pests or disease that can occur with sod and other planting methods.

Newly hydro seeded areas require water every few days through germination, but about 30% overall less than sod.

You should to start to see small green blades in 1-2 weeks depending on temperature, shade vs sun, watering and soil conditions.

Yes. However, the less foot or pet traffic the better. Walking on newly hydroseeded areas increase the chance for the mulch mat and seed to be damaged. Ideally, there should be no foot traffic for 3-4 weeks.

Yes. All the ingredients are natural and some even organic. All are non-toxic to pets and children.

Hydroseeding can be done anytime of year, weather permitting. Spring and fall are ideal but we can hydroseed in the summer and winter as well, weather permitting.

Seeding in the spring allows for the enjoyment of your new grass for summer and fall. Summer applications just need a little more care and watering due to higher temperatures and less natural water. Fall is great because of the warm soil temperatures and cooler air temperatures. Fall seeding may see only some growth, but the next spring new growth will emerge with great thickness.

Erosion control can be done anytime temperatures are above freezing.

There is no difference than the way the area would be prepared for sod.

For erosion control of new residential or commercial construction, having your excavator do a final grade with appropriate slopes for drainage and engineered designs is sufficient for seeding.

Removal of any dead grass or other vegetation is necessary for hydroseeding. If topsoil needs to be brought in, use a minimum of 4″, then level, rake and compact with a roller. Remove any large rocks and tree branches. Then we can hydroseed your new area!

Yes, hydroseeding is considered environmentally friendly because it reduces erosion, minimizes dust and promotes the growth of native vegetation.

Yes, hydroseeding is an effective method for stabilizing steep slopes and preventing erosion.

The best time for hydroseeding in Colorado is typically in the spring or fall, when temperatures are moderate and there is ample moisture.

A variety of grass, wildflower and erosion control seeds can be used for hydroseeding, depending on the project’s needs.

Yes. Hydroseeding can be used in high-traffic areas, but it may require additional care and maintenance to ensure proper establishment.

Yes, hydroseeding can be used to repair damaged or bare patches in an existing lawn, providing a quick and effective way to restore the grass.

Yes, hydroseeding is an excellent choice for slopes and hillsides, as it helps prevent erosion and promotes vegetation growth.

Yes, hydroseeding is often used to establish lawns in new construction sites, providing a quick and effective way to establish grass.

Care and Watering of Newly Hydroseeded Areas

An area in the process of hydroseeding / hydroturfing for erosion control.
  • Water every day 3-5 times per day 10-15 min for in-ground sprinkler systems.
  • Water every day 3-5 times per day 20-30 min for rotary or oscillating sprinklers.
  • Do not allow standing or pooling of water.
  • Do not cut grass until at least 3″ or for 3-4 weeks.
  • Leave grass 3-4″ long.  Longer grass provides better ground moisture retention.
  • After the first mowing, watering can be reduced to 4-5 times per week. Watering less frequently with longer duration will promote deeper root establishment.
  • Apply 1st re-fertilizer after 4-6 weeks. Use a fertilizer with at least 20% nitrogen, for example (20-10-10).
  • Weeds will appear faster than grass. Don’t panic, the grass will push most weeds out once it is established. Normal weeding can be done after 4-6 weeks.
  • Avoid pet and foot traffic for 2-3 weeks if possible.

Enjoy your new grass or lawn!  It has been seeded with natural fertilizers but will require standard care and re-fertilization periodically, normally every 4-6 weeks.
